KOLKATA: Two owners of a veterinary clinic were allegedly beaten up at Jheel Road in south Kolkata by the owner of two pet dogs and his kin when they were asked to take proper care of the animals.
The two dogs – a German Shepherd and a Labrador Retriever – were allegedly kept in a small open space outside the house in all seasons. When the owners of the clinic, Sreemoyee Sarkar (35) and Arnab Chakraborty, told the accused about the matter on Wednesday, they were allegedly assaulted. The victims lodged a complaint with Garfa police station. Cops have initiated a case of assault, molestation and criminal intimidation against the pet owner and his relatives. However, none were arrested until Friday night.
Cops said the pet owners also lodged a complaint against the duo, alleging that they had provoked them to illegally sell off the dogs, which had led to a scuffle.
A senior officer of Garfa police station said they are probing into the complaint and are questioning multiple persons in this regard.
“They touched me inappropriately and my friend was slapped and punched. The next day we learned that they had thrown one of the dogs from the terrace and we went back to the police station. Accompanied by cops, the owners took us to an animal shelter in Madurdaha where we found the German Shepherd injured. We demand justice for us as well as the animals,” said Sarkar.
TOI tried to contact with the prime accused Papan Banerjee. He had attended a call in the afternoon but claimed that he was in a hospital and would call back. Later, multiple calls made on his number went unanswered.
